EDWARD HARGRAVES

Australia and Its Gold Fields

1855 xvi

Hargraves was born in England in 1816, went to sea at age 14, and arrived in Sydney, Australia, in 1832. In Australia, he worked as a farmer and a shipping company agent; married; squandered his wife’s money; and in 1849 embarked for California. He had little success in California, but upon returning to Sydney in 1851, he was determined to claim a reward of £10,000 offered by the Australian government to anyone who could discover a payable gold field. He found only a few specks, but nonetheless in early May 1851 he trumpeted the discovery in an area he named Ophir. By the middle of May there were 300 prospectors in Ophir and the Australian gold rush had begun.
